Blog by Ron – Write What You Know

R. Frederick Riddle

Write what you know is advice that has been around for a long time. But it is still true. Let’s take a look.

What to Write.

Every writer faces this challenge. If fiction, it can refer to the genre, the plot, just about anything. If nonfiction it can refer again to the genre, and the topic. It can be a real dilemma.

What Genre to Write?

The genre or category a story falls into will determine the audience you reach. It can also determine characters, nature, and the plot itself.

Write What You Know.

This is outstanding advice, but it needs a little explanation. When I first heard this advice, it was meant very specific. As such, it limited you and placed you in a box. Yet it was also true. If you are writing about a subject, you don’t know it is a good chance that it will be reflected in the quality of your story.

Expand it From Knowledge Experienced or Gained.

I like this better because it opens that box. It is not only what you know, but it can also include what you learn. In my case, I had become known for writing fiction, especially novels based on Biblical events and characters. But I decided I wanted to write nonfiction. That led to me learning how to write about people and places I know in this life.

My best-selling book, Hurricane Ian Winds of Providence & Provisions is a classic example. My pastor and his family were caught in the midst of this terrible storm. While prepared for the hurricane they were not prepared for the flash flood that it stirred up. They lost everything, but survived. Instead of being a story of tragedy it became a story of faith in God, experiencing His providential care, and sharing with others. It was inspirational!

God laid it on my heart to write the story, but I had failed at previous attempts to write nonfiction. I had written a book on Donald Trump that was honest, well-documented, with references. It was a book that showed him at his best, but I couldn’t get anyone interested. My other attempt was to do a Ghost-Written book. This also failed.

But the book on Hurricane Ian was different than anything I had ever done. It ended up allowing the people who experienced it tell their own stories with only minor editing by me. It proved powerful.

But it was a book I had to learn as I wrote it.

Allow Yourself Room to Grow.

I believe that is key. Leave yourself room to grow as a person, and as a writer. Like a little hatchling eventually turns into a beautiful bird, you will be transformed into a writer. In fact, that thought is what I convey to people about my writing course. I take fledgling writers and transform them into published authors.

When you leave room for growth, to flap your wings, you learn not only to fly (write), but to soar (become published).

What an exciting experience it is when you get your book and hold it in your hands for the first time. It feels and smells wonderful to you! You feel transformed!

Now go, write what you know, and watch yourself grow.

Blog by Ron – Foggy Brain

R. Frederick Riddle

Foggy Brain is sometimes called hitting the wall. And that can happen. Whether it stops you completely or just makes it hard to think about your story. Maybe all you need is a nap. In today’s blog I want to explore Foggy Brain.

What is Foggy Brain?

I don’t know if that is a real thing medically speaking since it is a term I invented. It is my description of when the brain cannot focus on anything. It feels like you are in a fog.

Is There a Cure for Foggy Brain?

Yes. One particularly effective cure is rest. Whenever my mind gets foggy, I try rest. It usually works. But not always.

Another cure is to think about something else. Depending on what I think about the fog can be lifted. I have the ability to think about multiple books at the same time. Now, that is a little misleading. What I really do is set one story aside and work on another. Then, if I want, I can set that story aside and work on still another.

Sometimes I have three and maybe four books going. What I have discovered is that multitasking like that actually refreshes the brain.

Will It Work for Me?

It should. But we all think and act differently. Still, it is something worth experimenting with doing. One downside is that if you have several manuscripts you are working on, it will slow you down as far as how long it takes to complete. On the other hand, it might result in multiple books being published within a year.

Can You Avoid Foggy Brain?

Technically, I would answer yes. Because if you are multitasking plus getting adequate rest, your brain is regularly being refreshed. However, I don’t know of anyone who perfectly does that. For example, you might get caught up in a story and your entire focus becomes attached to that single story resulting in loss of sleep, and your mind becoming stressed. You have gotten off the wagon and now you are a candidate for Foggy Brain.

Here is a Plan to Minimize It

The plan is simple:

Try to multitask. This can include several manuscripts, or simply several different tasks. Like I said, having several manuscripts to work on works for me. Currently, I have the novel Daniel in the works, plus Moses Exile. I also am working on my first sci-fi called EVE. If that is not enough, I am also working on a client’s book.

Foggy Brain is Not Fun

It can bring your writing to a complete stop. If you stay in that condition very long it can handicap your writing. So, when you get into that situation, it is best to take action immediately.

Blog by Ron – Evolution is Not Fact

R. Frederick Riddle

Evolution is Not Fact. I recently read an article that said that evolution is fact. This article is in response to that erroneous claim.

The Article

The entire article reeked of bias, and arrogance. Its premise was that the weight of evidence proved it to be fact. Interestingly, he began by talking about the ‘theory of evolution’.

Evolution is a Theory.

Theory and fact are two different things. A theory is something believed but cannot be proved. Fact is something that has been proved. You might take a theory, prove it, and thereby it becomes fact. Very rare, but not beyond our thinking.

Something is called a theory because it cannot be proved. Thus, evolution is a theory as is creationism. Both theories interpret scientific discoveries (facts’) according to their assumptions. But both remain theories.

Evolution is Not Fact

As mentioned above, evolution interprets science, or raw science. Raw science is simply the basic scientific discoveries that have been made, are being made, and will be made. Scientists take these ‘facts’ and try to interpret them.

Evolutionists interpret according to their bias, namely that evolutionary processes occur over time; whereas creationism believes creation happened within a very short period of time, say six 24-hour days (God rested on the 7th day).

The Example of the Hittites

Scientists, scholars, and archeologists knew that the Bible spoke of a great people known as Hittites. These wise men searched all the wisdom of man and found no mention of these people. Thus, they proved the Bible wrong, and therefore not inerrant. This conclusion lasted for hundreds of years until 1834 when the first discovery was made. Even then it wasn’t identified as Hittite until later.

In the second half of the 19th century an abundance of evidence revealed not only the existence of the Hittites, but of their power and greatness.

Evolution is not Fact, it is Man’s Wisdom

As with the Hittites the modern version of Scientists, scholars, and archeologists have concluded that evolution is a fact. What they fail to see, or at least acknowledge, is that theory and fact are two different things, as I have already shown.

Scientists, scholars, and archeologists are very smart. But if you have smarts but don’t have God’s Word, you end up looking dumb. They, for the most part, are not interested in God’s view. In fact, most of them don’t believe in God.

They celebrate their wisdom, and their accomplishments while denigrating the wisdom and accomplishments of Bible believers. They dig in their heels and become fools.

Evolution is not Fact, but Science is True

Now wait a minute! If science is true, then why isn’t evolution? Evolution is, as noted above, an interpretation of facts. For example, they test rocks to determine age. Are these tests proof? No. Why? Because the testing is flawed. Their testing is based upon what is called uniformitarianism or the assumption that at the same natural laws and processes that operate in our present-day scientific observations have always operated in the universe in the past and apply everywhere in the universe.

But what if that is not true? Evolution would fall on its face. There are problems with the Uniformitarian view, which we don’t have time to go into. While evolution accepts this view there are aspects, such as the Big Bang theory, that operate contrary to that view.

Evolution is not a Fact is a truth not Visited.

Why do I say that?

Because evolution dominates the scientific world. Believers in this theory are intolerant of other views and will fight to keep them from being heard. They resist it no matter how foolish it makes them look. They write articles, as I mentioned earlier, that are easily refuted. But in their arrogance, they laugh and sneer.

The Bible Warns Against the Wisdom of Man

Their wisdom is confusion and misrepresentation. The Bible talks repeatedly about their wisdom in I Corinthians 1:18-25; Isaiah 55:8-9; Proverbs 14:12; Job 38:4; Isaiah 45:9, 12; Proverbs 3:7; and many more!

Science is a Useful Tool

I believe in science. Through science man has reached the stars, visited the ocean depths, crossed the country with trains, flew across the oceans, laundered their clothes, invented the automobile, created medicines, created the internet, and so much more.

But when science seeks to destroy the Bible. Wait! They say that is not their goal.

That may be true of individual men and women, but behind them and encouraging them is the devil himself. It is Satan who tricked Eve, who rebelled against God, who is the father of lies, and who wants us to worship anything other than God Himself!

Science is Best When it Admits Evolution is Not Fact

Modern science has embraced evolution because it denies creation. This is true whether they believe it to be so or not. But when you find scientists, and there are many, that believe in God, His Word, and His Son, then you have scientists who are free to use their knowledge in a way that truly blesses humanity.
